Oyama Tournament.
Congratulations to all Kenshikai members who participated in the Oyama tournament this past Sunday. All Kenshikai members who entered took home a trophy! Senpai John LaVallee took 2nd in full contact lightweight category. Senpai Yuko took 1st place in black belt kata. Colleen took 2nd place and Kiyoka took 3rd place in brown belt kata. Senpai Clay from Riverdale Kenshikai took 2nd place in full contact heavyweight division and junion black belt Evin Nadaner took 1st place in the 13-14 year old semi-contact division. Congrats to all our winners and thank you to people who came out to support our team!

Congratulations to Vanderbilt Kenshikai's own Senpai Jennifer Honn-Rennie for winning one of the highest honors in the television industry--a Primetime Emmy award! She had been personally nominated in the catagory "Outstanding Editing for a Non-Fiction Special" for her work on Rome: Engineering an Empire, which aired earlier this year on The History Channel. The competition was very strong, including HBO's special, Bagdad ER and Martin Scorsese's Bob Dylan documentary. The members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences selected Senpai Jennifer's editing work as the most deserving of the prize. (Her editing also helped to carry the Rome program to victory for a second Emmy for "Outstanding Non-Fiction Special.") Senpai Jennifer traveled to Los Angeles for the ceremony and had the fun of accepting her award on the same stage with many TV stars and celebrities.

A Memorial for the late Shuseki Shihan William Oliver
will be held on
Saturday, November 19, 2005, between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the dojo of
Shihan Monte Allen
(555 5th Avenue , 2nd Floor, Brooklyn, NY).
Beginning at 5:30 p.m., the leaders of Kenshikai Karate will speak
briefly, after which others may share their thoughts, as time permits.
Those attending will have the opportunity to acquire a special
commemorative T-shirt and video that honor Shuseki Shihan and his
karate legacy. Donations will be used to defray the cost of a Memorial
Head Stone for Shuseki Shihan Oliver's grave site.

Shihan Monte and Shihan Leighton along with the Kenshikai Karate fighting team representing Kenshikai Karate, headed by Kyoshi Sookdar, as well as a number of Black Belt students from the Vanderbilt will be visiting Japan to attend Jukucho Katsuaki Sato's first World Tournament.
The tournament is being held on Sunday, April 17. Jukucho Sato has dedicated his tournament to the memory of Shuseki-Shihan Oliver.
The Kenshikai group leaves for Tokyo, Japan on Thursday, April 14 and will be back on Tuesday, April 19.
